As they make their way to William Tell's home, Arnold is distraught by his father's rebuke. When the boat is disappearing into the distance the soldiers rush in, headed by Rodolphe, who tries in vain to discover who it is that has helped Leuthold. Arnold promises that, when the day dawns that they must fight for their freedom, he will join the rebel army.
